Wat Mahathat (The Temple of the Great Relic) is one of the most important and iconic temples in the Ayutthaya Historical Park.
It was built during the reign of King Borommaracha I (1350–1388) and served as a religious center and the seat of the Supreme Patriarch during the Ayutthaya Kingdom.
The temple is best known for the Buddha’s head entwined in the roots of a Bodhi tree, a world-famous image symbolizing the harmony between nature and spirituality.
Visitors can explore ancient prangs (Khmer-style towers), Buddha statues, and the remains of historical structures that once reflected the grandeur of old Ayutthaya.
